Grinding a Concrete Wall to Make It Smooth

If concrete is poured for a wall, it requires formwork on both sides, and in most cases, use is made of wood or steel plates. While steel plates may give a relatively smooth finish, it will still have uneven areas at the joints of the plates. Wooden formwork can also give smooth finish if use is made of marine plywood and will have fewer joints. The use of timber will give the concrete surfaces of the walls, a mirror image of the grains of the wood, and therefore a rough finish.

Rough or uneven walls do not look good and you will need to make the wall smooth before you can use the space that the wall helps to enclose. Sanding a wall can help to smoothen it, but sanding large areas can be cumbersome and difficult, a process that can be made easier by using grinders with the right grinding wheels. It is also possible to apply a thin overlay of concrete or plaster to make the walls smooth, after sanding areas that are particularly bad.

We will talk more about the process of grinding which is the focus of this article. The main purpose of grinding any concrete surface, be it floors or walls, is to remove any contaminants, ridges, unevenness, and any loose material from the surface that is being smoothened. Remove the imperfections and the ridges caused at joints and you can then have a wall that is smooth enough to take on any kind of desired paint or coating that can increase the aesthetics of the wall.

Concrete grinders have rotating heads that level and smooth the concrete surface. These rotating heads are made up of abrasive discs that use diamond or tungsten carbide, hard materials, to remove the unwanted portions of the concrete that can then make the wall surface smooth and acceptable. Diamond grinders provide a surface finish classified as CSP 2, which gives a surface smooth enough to apply further coatings or covering for the wall. These grinders can take off high concrete spots and joints that are uneven to a depth of up to 3mm.

Besides grinders, which are the ideal equipment for smoothing the roughness out of concrete walls, you can also use shot blasting or sandblasting to deal with very rough walls. You can also use scabblers or chisel scrapers, which are more abrasive than grinders and will remove as much as 6mm from the concrete surface.

Check the unevenness in the wall that you want to smoothen before you decide on the best equipment for creating the type of surface you desire on a wall.

Tips On Preparing Your Floor For Concrete Grinding

If you are going to grind your concrete floor, you need to prepare your floor before embarking upon this task. The primary purpose of doing this is to remove existing floor coatings. You may also choose to grind your concrete floor because it is on level or has multiple bumps. The grinding is accomplished because of a tool that uses a diamond blade. It is designed specifically to remove film floor coatings that are extremely thin. You may also be doing this to get ready for concrete polishing. This is how you can prepare your floor for concrete grinding.

How To Prepare Your Concrete Floor For Grinding:

The preparation process requires you to first remove any furniture or equipment that is on the floor that will prevent a clear shot back and forth. You will also want to remove any type of particulate matter that is on the floor. This could cause problems with the grinding process. It is possible that small pieces of material could cause gouging in the concrete. This would literally defeat your purpose for carefully removing the upper layers. Once that is done, which will include vacuuming the floor as well, you can then begin to grind the floor with your machine.

Why Is Grinding Preferred Over Other Methods:

Grinding is preferred for a couple of different reasons. There are some that will use what is called a pulverization method. This is a type of blasting that can create many problems. One of those problems is the appearance of microfractures. When this occurs, the concrete can become unstable, causing it to become loose, and this could prevent removing smaller layers from the surface. Other methods include pressure cleaning, scarification, and a process called milling. By simply preparing the floor in the way described, and using the grinding equipment, you can feel confident about the final result. Check out our home page: https://www.concretegrindingauckland.net.nz/

The preparation process may take longer than the grinding process. It just depends on how cluttered the area is where you will do the grinding. It may also be a very dusty area, filled with small particulates in all directions, and this could take some time to clean even with a professional-grade shop vac. Once done, you can then commence with the polishing on this perfectly smooth the floor that you will soon have. Although it takes some time, preparing your concrete floor for grinding is a necessary task to ensure the best overall effect.

Doing a DIY project on your home concrete floor? Some may say that doing it on your own terms rather than letting the professionals handle it can save you tons of cash, especially when you’re only dealing with a small area. After all, if it can save you an essential amount of money, why not do it by yourself? Not only that, you’ll get to experience on a first-hand basis the process of preparing your concrete floor before sealing it. But how would you do it? What do you need to prepare go get a nice concrete finish? Read on to find out.

What is concrete sealing?

Concrete sealing is the process of putting industrial sealers that will coat your concrete for the main purpose of preventing water that is absorbed by the concrete that can lead to stains, corrosion and cracks or form a layer that is impenetrable from foreign contaminants from entering the concrete. There are a lot of commercial sealers available in the market that will ultimately depend on what you need.

Why you need to seal your concrete floor?
There are a lot of flooring options that are available through different service providers however; concrete sealing addresses these areas of concerns.

You want your floor to be long-lasting – as previously mentioned, when concrete is exposed to foreign contaminants like water, dirt and others, this can lead to cracks, corrosion and the inevitable deterioration. With sealed concrete, it ensures the longevity of your concrete floor by layering a protective area to prohibit the entry of such elements.

You want your floor to look visually stunning – one of the many good things sealed concrete have is that it adds to the over-all look of your home.

You want your floor to be low-maintenance – other flooring options involve a lot of elaborate and tedious tasks just to clean. With sealed concrete, it only takes a sweep or a mop to clean because it is stain and dust-resistant.

You want an affordable flooring option – what better reason to choose this option is because of its practicality. You don’t need to spend much for your concrete floor to look stunning.
Now, how would you prepare your concrete floor for the sealing project? Listed below are the steps to make it happen.

Remove any furniture or objects lying on the floor and start to clean the area. You can clean it by giving it a thorough sweep first then mop the whole area.

Remove excess oils and other wet elements on the floor. Give it a good scrub. If you don’t remove these liquid components, chances are, your sealer won’t stick to the floor. It will be useless.

You can purchase masonry cleaner or other floor cleaning options to clean the concrete floor. Once you are sure that it is clear of foreign contaminants, evenly distribute the masonry cleaner and once the whole area is covered, scrub it with a scrubbing broom (non-metal with firm bristles).

Once the solution sets in for a maximum of 20 minutes, rinse it with a garden hose or a power washer instead. Start from one end to another.

You can use a squeegee to get rid of the remaining water or let it dry for a solid 24 hours.

You can now apply the sealer once the floor is dry and its texture is similar to that of a light to medium grit sandpaper.
Make sure that before you try the whole process, you have asked for help and recommendations from people with expertise and proper training for the task. Also, do not forget to wear protective outfit like gloves, goggles and boots as you’ll be dealing with industrial cleaners that might potentially harm you
